Chuck's Story

Before

Chuck Spaeth never thought that a busy travel schedule would be hard on his teeth. Now 76 and retired, he spent an exciting career as a flight mechanic and airline pilot. His journey included time in the military as well as working for the commercial airline, Alaska.

Chuck said in 1961 he became one of three people to enter Alaska’s first pilot training program. “We were paid to work on flights as mechanics and completed flying hours during down time until we had our pilot licenses,” he said.

“It’s awesome,” Chuck said when asked about flying a plane. “When the weather was good it was beautiful views and smooth sailing. And when the weather was bad it was challenging and intense. Either way, I loved it.”

Unfortunately, his demanding responsibilities didn’t always allow for great dental care. “I’m tough on my teeth,” Chuck said. On top of a busy travel schedule, he had a habit of grinding his teeth while he worked. They were worn down, cracking, discolored and putting him in visible distress.

During

Chuck’s co-pilot, Steve Ball thought he had a solution to the problem. He mentioned his daughter, Dr. Amy Norman, runs a dentistry practice and recommended that Chuck go see her.

Although thankful for the suggestion, Chuck didn’t take choosing a dentist lightly. His wife, Gail who coincidentally works as a flight attendant, had poor dental work done in the past. They pulled unnecessary teeth and left her in pain and off balance.

As soon as Chuck walked in the door of Dr. Norman’s practice, Dream Smile, he was glad he did. “They are meticulous, professional and attentive,” he said.

During the procedure, Chuck was comfortable and felt confident in the care he received. “Amy is one of those people who works very hard and intense,” he said. She’s the real deal and I knew it.”

After

After restorative work, Chuck looks great. But more importantly, his mouth is healthy again. He’s never had problems with his fillings and even encouraged Gale to have her teeth restored by the Dream Team as well.

Despite the hour-long drive to Everett from their home, the Spaeth’s continue to see Dr. Norman for regular cleanings and maintenance nearly 20 years after Chuck’s first procedure. The couple has built a relationship with the office manager, Judy, who knows exactly when to schedule them to avoid traffic on the trip.

“I’ve never come into contact with someone in her office that’s not unbelievably good,” Chuck said. “It’s fun going to the dentist. It’s very well orchestrated and she (Dr. Norman) is the best of the best.”

Now that his mouth is healthy and he is on the ground, Chuck enjoys motorcycle riding, skiing and boating in Alaska. “I have a tendency to have too much fun,” he said laughing. Gale still works as a flight attendant, although Chuck wishes she would retire and join his adventures full time already.
