Is Halitosis a Big Deal?

Halitosis is another name for bad breath, a dental health condition characterized by the emanation of bad odor from an individual’s mouth. While the condition is quite embarrassing, it could also be a sign of other underlying conditions. This is why it is more than just a disease on its own. Sometimes, it could be a potentially serious condition that may pose a threat to your overall health.

Possible Halitosis Causes

The most common reason some people have halitosis is gum disease. Plaque accumulation on the teeth gives room for bacteria buildup. Over time, this bacteria accumulation can lead to gum irritation. Leaving the condition untreated can eventually damage the gums as well as the jawbone.

Some of the other common reasons for bad breath can include cavities, ill-fitting dentures and oral infections. Some people may also be suffering from halitosis due to dry mouth. Dry mouth is a condition in which the mouth is unable to produce enough saliva. This could happen as a result of certain medications or problems with the salivary gland.

Aside from all of these dental health conditions that can cause halitosis as an accompanying symptom, bad breath may also result from many other serious health issues. These can include pneumonia, diabetes and respiratory infections, among others. Sometimes, it could also be a result of something going wrong with the kidney or the liver.

Seeing a Dentist

Whether or not you think it’s more than just bad breath, it’s always a smart decision to see your dentist for help as soon as possible. Your dentist should be able to help pinpoint the cause to determine the best possible treatment plan. Bad breath is embarrassing, but there could be even more dangers lurking under the surface. It always helps to seek help as soon as possible.
