What Does Oral Health Have to Do with Blood Pressure?

If it seems like you’re reading more these days about different health conditions that can be traced back to oral health in some way, you are! More and more research is being conducted to support the importance of maintaining your oral health in order to properly maintain your overall health. If you suffer from high blood pressure, your gums could be a contributing factor.

A new study from the American Heart Association’s journal Hypertension reports that those taking medication for high blood pressure are more likely to see positive results if they have good oral health. The study reviewed more than 3,600 patients’ medical and dental exam records and found that the patients with healthier gums had lower blood pressure and responded better to the medications meant to lower blood pressure. In fact, patients in the study with gum disease were 20 percent less likely to have healthy blood pressure levels, even with the medication, than those with healthier gums.

In the conclusion of the study, researchers stated that there was enough evidence to support the recommendation that those who are suffering from gum disease, or periodontal disease, could benefit from increased monitoring of blood pressure, and those with diagnosed hypertension, or high blood pressure, should be referred to a dentist as part of their treatment plan.
